A library that opens after class
A school library that used to lock its doors the moment the final bell rang now stays open for two extra hours every afternoon, and the extra time has changed what happens inside it.
The library's circulationcirculationthe number of books that get checked out and returned over a period of time has more than doubled since the after-class hours started, according to the librarian's own tally on a whiteboard by the door.
One wall now fills up with a sticky note for every new word a student learns while reading, so the wall itself keeps growing week by week.
Older students have started running a quiet homework corner for younger ones, trading help with fractions for help finding a good next book.
The school says it plans to keep the after-class hours running through next year, and is now looking for funding to keep the lights and heating on through winter evenings.
